In essence, the 1 Series M Coupé takes the best bits from the Z4 sDrive35is, the M3 and the 1 Series Coupé. The straight-six, twin-turbocharged engine is based on that in the Z4, and though the final homologated figures have yet to be released, we believe peak power is 335bhp and torque is about 340lb.ft. That last figure is significantly more than the M3 has incidentally, and it’s what defines the power delivery. It’s creamy smooth and urgent from low revs, with a distinct rise in accelerative force as both turbos deliver their best in the mid-range.
The overriding impression of the car is one of unflappable stability. That’s particularly true under braking and over mid-corner bumps. It features standard fixed damping and steel springs by the way, and adaptive damping will not be offered. Two different throttle maps and various stages of traction control will be the extent of driver customisation available.
There’s a new grille, revised bumper design, updated wheels and a new trunk lid. New gearing in the five-speed transmission also bumps the Accord’s EPA numbers a bit. Four-cylinder Accords are now rated at 23 city and 34 highway mpg.
2011 Honda Accord SE has the same 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine as in the Accord base LX and LX-P trims. It produces 177 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 161 pound-feet of torque at 4,300 rpm. It comes standard with a five-speed automatic transmission with no manual override. There is no manual transmission available on the SE trim level either.
At test track, it is moseyed along from zero to 60 mph in 9.2 seconds (8.9 with 1 foot of rollout like on a drag strip) and reached the quarter-mile in 16.7 seconds at 83.5 mph.
The 2011 Honda Accord SE is a minor refresh of last year’s model along with a repackaging of a few options to make a leather-lined Accord more affordable. And sure enough, it’s a pretty slick package.
At 194.1 inches long and 72.7 inches wide, the Accord is the largest sedan in this class. It is also the lightest, weighing in at just under 3,300 pounds. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata is a highly competitive entry into the mid-size family sedan segment. Well, that’s finally changed with the 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T SE. Not the inline-four part, but the displacement has dropped to 2.0-liters and a twin-scroll turbo pushing 17.4 psi was strapped on. The new turbo Sonata makes 274 horsepower That’s more than the V6 Accord (271) and more than the V6 Camry (268), it’s more than the Malibu (252) and more than the Altima (270).
However, after road test has result that’s with TC on, the Sonata 2.0T was a little slow off the line, not allowing wheelspin, but the time was still plenty quick. With the stability system off, it allows a bit of wheelspin, but ultimately wasn’t that much quicker. Does not allow pedal overlap for power braking. Does not hold gears; manual mode auto-upshifts, early no less. Fairly significant heat-soak.
With ESP off, the slalom was an exercise in front-wheel-drive oversteer. Slow in, fast out kept the rear in line, and steering smoothness was key. It’s easy to get behind quickly due to slight yaw delay, combined with a losse tail.
